Based on the story by Bernard Malamud, THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS involves Feld, an immigrant shoemaker working in New York's Lower East Side in 1949. Feld tries to fix up his Americanized daughter Miriam with an enterprising college boy named Max. Unfortunately, Miriam has already fallen in love with Feld's assistant Sobel, a recent émigré and Holocaust survivor.
The New York Times wrote " The First Seven Years", with its conflicting takes on the elusive American Dream, is a perfect example of Malamud's ability to "Étake figures from the immigrant Jewish petty bourgeoisie and place them into struggles worthy of the Greeks."
